Codeleaf was a Chinese EdTech company co-founded by Wang Wei in 2021 with the goal of bringing a structured Python curriculum into middle schools that had previously taught coding only as an extracurricular elective. The company operated for approximately two and a half years before winding down operations in late 2023.
Product
As curriculum lead, Wang designed the company's 64-lesson Python sequence, organised into four arcs of sixteen lessons each. The defining pedagogical choice was to anchor every coding concept to an analogy from middle-school mathematics or physics — for instance, introducing functions through the algebra-class notion of $f(x)$ rather than the more common "recipe" metaphor, and introducing iteration through the physics-class notion of cumulative motion rather than the abstract idea of "doing something many times." This bridging style was the core differentiator from competing curricula, most of which were derived from English-language coding-bootcamp material that did not assume any specific middle-school baseline.
Operations
Codeleaf shipped two product tiers. The school-licensed tier sold to middle schools as a full-semester curriculum with teacher-training materials and a per-student annual license. The direct-to-family tier sold a self-paced version to parents through a WeChat mini-program. At peak in mid-2023, the company had approximately 8,000 paying students across 22 Chinese cities, with the school-licensed tier accounting for about two thirds of revenue.
Wind-down
In the second half of 2023, the company wound down operations following the regulatory tightening of China's after-school education sector. The closure was orderly: every direct-to-family customer was either refunded the remaining months of their subscription or migrated to a partner platform with continued curriculum access, and all school-tier contracts were honoured through the academic year. The team published a public closure note explaining the decision and is occasionally cited in Chinese-language analyses of the post-2021 EdTech contraction.
Aftermath
Wang has described the Codeleaf experience as the turning point of his career: it gave him direct exposure to product design, B2B sales, and operational decision-making under regulatory uncertainty, all of which he has cited as the reason he is now seeking a full transition into industry product-management roles rather than returning to a tenure-track academic path.
